Donations of sport supplies to Boys & Girls Clubs of Tracy, CA
April, 2018 – August, 2018
While my mom was cleaning our closets during her spring cleaning, I noticed that she put aside many of the old sports uniforms that my brother and I used to wear. As I watched her set them aside for donations I realized I could combine two of my interests together: I could give the same clothes and sports equipment to underprivileged children across the world so they could play sports just like I did. I recognized that I could use soccer and other sports as vehicle of social change and help support underprivileged children develop physically and personally.
I decided to do a donation drive by asking my friends, neighbors, soccer clubs in area, and sport stores to donate lightly used or unused sports equipment. By the end of May, 2018, I had gathered enough uniforms, accessories and equipment to donate. The next step was to find the right organization or group to donate to. As I remembered the moment of distributing uniforms and soccer balls to the children in Peru and seeing beautiful smiles on their faces, I believed donating the collections internationally was my first pick.
As I was researching for the right organization to donate to, I heard on the news that the Boys and Girls Club of Tracy was shutting down due to budget cuts and that there was a huge donation drive being conducted by their local board. I thought this was a good place for me to help the underserved local community of kids. I felt that there would be a lot of kids that wanted to continue to play sports, but would miss it all due to the budget cuts. I contacted their Program Director and got a very positive response back immediately.
At the end of the summer, my mom and I packed the donation items and dropped them off at the Boys and Girls Club of Tracy. It was a pleasure to meet the friendly and wonderful staff at the center and the kids in the after-school program.
