Project Location
Mgomba primary school is in Ikwiriri, a coastal village in the Rufiji district in Tanzania, Africa. There are approximately 12,000 Residents living in the village with an average household size of 4.3 members according to National Bureau of Statistics Tanzania. Census data puts high mortality and injury rates due to lack of basic facilities like toilets, sanitation, hospitals and safe roads to the mass population.
The Mgomba Primary School in Ikwiriri Village, caters to the physically disabled and hard of hearing students. The school has a total of 120 students with 25 disabled students. Only 15 disabled students currently attend school, remaining 10 of them are unable to attend because of lack of facilities like wheel chairs, proper toilets and other basic necessities. The school’s latrine for the disabled has fallen into severe disrepair. The latrine/toilets were built in 1988 in pit-style, and have since become quite full, leading to foul smells perforating throughout the immediate area. Building hosting these toilets has formed large cracks, possibly due to poor initial construction when the foundation was laid. There are no doors to protect the girls and the pit toilets cannot to be used by disabled on the wheelchairs. The result of lack of sanitation, drainage, privacy and poor conditions have led to undignified restroom and hygiene experience for the girls at the school, which has further unintended ramifications on morale and academic performance.
Project Goal
This project will help reconstruct the latrine block which will consist of two sitting style toilets specially made for the physically disabled, and a wall around the entrance of the latrine block for privacy. Wheelchairs will be donated to the 10 disabled students who are currently unable to attend school due to lack of facilities.
Construction and materials will be sourced from the hardware stores from the funds raised. The rotary club of Tanzania volunteers along with professional plumbers and some parent volunteers plan to construct the latrines. This project is scheduled to be completed by April, 2019. Construction of the latrine block will begin with removing the old pit toilets and installing the sitting style toilets for disabled students to use.
Project Impact
This project is expected to greatly benefit disabled students. The disabled girls at the high school will have a much more dignified experience as they use the restroom, which will likely have a positive effect on their overall morale, especially as it translates to their academics. The students will also no longer have to go into the forest to excrete behind the bushes or worry for privacy. An increase in hygienic practices is reasonably expected to reduce the spread of illness and thus decrease sick days for the students.
